In legend, Lysippe, an Amazon queen, offended Aphrodite due to her rejection of marriage and devotion to war. She eventually had children, including a son named Tanais. Tanais grew up with a disdain for marriage and a devotion to the god of war, Ares. Aphrodite punished them by causing Tanais to fall in love with Lysippe, or some versions say she inspired mutual love between them. Tanais, unable to resist his feelings, drowned himself in the Amazon River, which was then renamed Tanais (now Don) in his memory. Haunted by Tanais's spirit, Lysippe left and founded the city of Themiscyra by the Fermodon River. She established a society where men managed household chores, and women ruled and fought. Lysippe's conquests took her to Tanais (Don), where she built temples to Apollo and Artemis. She died heroically in battle. Her daughter Hippolyta succeeded her, expanding the kingdom's glory. She introduced education for girls, teaching various skills and ancient healing rituals. Many nations submitted to the Amazon queens from Tanais to Thrace, and their successors continued their rule successfully.
