Hairy and fanged, with the hooves and horns of a massive goat, Krampus is a sight to fear, especially for children who stray from their families. Every year on Krampusnacht, at the peak of the winter solstice, Krampus comes out to hunt in all of the local towns and villages with a bundle of birch switches and a special basket designed to carry away children. Unsuspecting children vanish in the night, and no one knows where they go. It is said that only the nastiest and disobedient children will entice Krampus and get taken away to Helheim, also known as the underworld. Here the child is downed for fun or forced into a life of slavery, unless Krampus is particularly hungry that night… The other misbehaved children in the village receive a Birch Switch from Krampus to let them know that they are next on the list. If one is lucky enough to please this ancient beast, then their life and family will be spared, and sometimes a gift of tainted spirits, coal or even coins will be delivered into the shoes left out by the doorstep.
