Shallots are the mini version of a red onion. Their outer skin has a shade of purple over the white colored flesh.
While onions add a more potent heat, shallots have a delicate, sweet flavor with a tinge of sharpness. Any recipe that calls for onions can almost always be substituted with shallots; just make sure you use the same amount!
